Day Twenty Four

A picture of something you wish you could change.

Attitudes like this. Everyone should have the right to make their own choices and choose their own lifestyles without getting awful flack like this. Equal rights for all, all the way.

Day Twenty Three

A picture of your favorite book.

This is a beautiful book. I've read it so many times, and it never gets old. Still gets me. So amazing.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Day Twenty Two

A picture of something you wish you were better at.

I'm not afraid to say that I am pretty darn good at volleyball. But I could be better. Way better.

Day Twenty One

A picture of something you wish you could forget.

Hurricane Katrina. 'Nuff said.

Day Twenty

A picture of somewhere you'd love to travel.

Ireland. We were there in 2008 and this is one of the pictures I took on that trip. Unfortunately, we had been away from home for a long time by the time we got to Ireland and I was crazy worn out, so I was kind of a downer for most of the trip. I'd love to go back and have a do-over trip.

Day Nineteen

A picture and a letter.

Dear MJ,
In general, I think you're pretty cool. I'm glad I'm you. Most days. You're nice and funny and you have a sunny disposition and a lot of happiness. You're also narcissistic, sometimes cruel, a downer, and you hold onto the past and your own failings too tightly. You cause your self a lot of pain, going over and over the things you blame yourself for and the things you don't like about yourself. You could be a lot happier if yo would just let yourself be.
But, despite all that, you're a barrel of laughs. You're really good to yourself (maybe too good) and you enjoy what you've got. So, self, thanks for being you. It's been a hell of a ride.
All my love,
MJ

Day Eighteen

A picture of your biggest insecurity.

Way to not pull any punches, MJ. I have some abandonment issues. I couldn't tell you why, but there you go.

I wish you could have been there for the sun & the rain & the long, hard hills. for the sound of a thousand conversations scattered along the road. For the people laughing & crying & remembering the end. But, mainly, I wish you could have been there. - Brian Andreas

Day Seventeen

I think timed challenges like this only serve to remind me that I am a horrible procrastinator.

A picture of something that has made a huge impact on your life recently.

Welcome to Oregon. It's not terribly recent, but I moved out and moved away last July.

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Day Sixteen

A picture of someone who inspires you. (Other than Sean)

Snoop Dogg.

He parties and is super chill. He does the grass and other stuff, but stays clean and classy; most people cant manage that. I want to be like him, but without the partying because I don't like to party.

Day Fifteen

A picture of something you want to do before you die.

Ride an elephant :)

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Day Fourteen

A picture of someone you could never imagine your life without.

Who else?
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. - Bible, Corinthians 13: 4-8

Day Thirteen

A picture of your favorite band or artist.

Tough question, so I have to pick two. Guster and The Weepies.

Shining like a work of art, hanging on a wall of stars, are you what I think you are? You're my satellite. You're riding with me tonight. Passeger side, lighting the sky, always the first star that I find. - Guster, Satellite

Everyday is ice cream and chocolate cake and what you make of it. Let me just say, you get what you take from it, so be amazed and never stop, never stop, never stop. You gotta be brave. - The Weepies, All This Beauty

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Day Twelve

A picture of something you love.

Neil Gaiman, author of Neverwhere, American Gods, Stardust, Coraline, The Sandman comics, and much more. He is amazing.

Everybody has a secret world inside of them. All of the people of the world, I mean everybody. No matter how dull or boring they are on the outside, inside them they've all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds. Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands maybe. - Neil Gaiman

Monday, February 14, 2011

Day Eleven

A picture of something you hate.

On this Valentine's Day, I'm here to remind you that the screwed up, twisted relationship they have in those books and movies is not real love.

Day Ten

A picture of the person you do the craziest things with.

Sean, Chloe, Jamie, Qacei, Anders, Beaver, Patrick, Chelsea, Megan, and Papa.

Love doesn't make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile. - Franklin P. Jones

Day Ten of Ten (Final Day)

One thing you want to be different in your life by next year.

I'd like to be more self-reliant. Make my own money, pay for my own expenses, live in my own place. I want to be more responsible for and more in charge of my own life and have the means to do the things I want to do. I want to build my own life and my own world and take charge.

Second star to the right and straight on 'till morning. - Disney's Peter Pan

Saturday, February 12, 2011

Day Nine

A picture of the person who has gotten you through the most.

I haven't known him as long as I've known other people close to me, but he's helped me through so much more than anyone else because he's the first person I've really let help me.
Sometimes when you fall, you fly. - Neil Gaiman

Day Nine of Ten

Two of your most favorite memories.

1. When Sean proposed to me. It was totally perfect.

2. Thanksgiving this year. The whole day was really great. We spent it at grandma and papa's, as is tradition. It was realy snowy, so Sean, Chelsea, Megan, Chloe, Madison, and I went out and had a really fun snowball fight and went sledding (in the plastic kiddie pool). At dinner we always go around the table and everybody says what they're thankful for. We saved papa for last because he usually has a lot to say about what he's thankful for. He didn't disappoint. He talked about how thankful he was for my grandma, for her taking him to and from the doctor and taking care of him as he's been sick. He teared up and told us he probably wouldn't have made it without her and made me, Chelsea, and Megan cry. It was really touching and beautiful and I'll remember it the rest of my life.

Day Eight

A picture that makes you laugh.

Fergus likes to climb people.

"But I don't want to go among mad people," said Alice. "Oh, you can't help that," said the cat. "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad." "How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the cat, "or you wouldn't have come here." - Lewis Carroll

Day Eight of Ten

Three things you want to do before you die.

1. Road trip! All over the states. Road trippin' with my two favorite allies, fully loaded, we got snacks and supplies. I want to go everywhere and see everything and do amazing, unforgettable things. I want to go to all these incredible national parks and monuments, see all these great things, take pictures of everything, go to shows everywhere, rock climb, go horseback riding, kayak, hike, eat, dance, and explore.

2. Travel all through Europe. There's so much history and culture and language to discover and I really want to go and see it all.

3. Have kids. I seriously love them and I think it would be so amazing to have them and so much fun.

Day Seven of Ten

Four songs that mean a lot to you.

1. Rocky Raccoon, by The Beatles.
My mom used to sing this song (among many others) when she would tuck me into bed every night.

2. Casimir Pulaski Day, by Sufjan Stevens.
This song was playing by chance during a really hard time for me a few of the lyrics were eerily appropriate.

3. Stickshifts and Safetybelts, by Cake.
Sean wrote this song for me.

4. I Hate People, by Jemina Pearl
This was the first song on a CD Sean made for me before we were together and it's totally us.

Day Seven

A picture of your most treasured item.

My engagement ring.

We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatiblew ith ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love. - Anonymous

Detour

I will eventually get back to the challenges I was doing, but in the meantime here's a recipe I made the other day that kicked so much ass.

White Russian Cupcakes

makes 12 cupcakes

1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup sugar
6 tablespoons softened butter
1 large egg and 1 egg white
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk
1/8 cup vodka
1/4 cup Kahlua, divided

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a cupcake pan with paper liners.

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a separate bowl or stand mixer, beat together the sugar and butter until combined. Add egg and egg white, one at a time, then add vanilla, vodka, and 1/8 cup Kahlua. Gradually add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the milk, ending with the flour mixture.

Bake 17-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of a cupcake comes out clean. While the cupcakes are still warm, brush the tops with the remaining Kahlua. Remove from pan and cool COMPLETELY on a wire rack before frosting.

Kahlua Buttercream

1 stick of softened butter
3 cups powdered sugar
Pinch of salt
3-4 tablespoons Kahlua

Beat butter until creamy. Add salt. Add powdered sugar one cup at a time, beating until combined. Add Kahlua one tablespoon at a time until you reach desired consistency.

Day Six

A picture of a person you'd love to trade places with for a day.
My younger self. To see just what was going on in the head of mine, offer guidance, steer away from things I now regret. And so Younger MJ could see my life now and how much better it's gonna get and how much I was wrong about.

Day Six of Ten

Five People Who Mean a Lot to You.

1. Of course, Sean.
He's the very best and my very best friend. I love him a lot and he makes me crazy insane happy.

2. Chloe.
My baby sister is also my best friend. We're bros and I like her a lot.

3. My papa.

He is so cool. He's always been the best grandpa ever. When we were young he told us scary stories, now he takes us crabbing and clamming and blackberry picking, and he makes us laugh. He and grandma have built the most amazing family and the best traditions and they bring our family together. They're the glue. My papa is very special to me and an amazing man.

4. My grandma.

This lady is legitimately the greatest grandma in the world. Like, if they had a grandma contest she would win hands down like papa would win the papa contest. My fondest childhood memories are of her and things she did. Holidays, birthdays, shopping trips, sleepovers. Pancakes in the morning, getting spoiled, Thanksgiving dinner, and Christmas dinner. Love my grandma.

5. My parents.

Best mommy and daddy ever. They're really cool, they provide what I need, they're always there. Cannot thank them enough for the childhood I had.

Other things may change us, but we start and end with family. - Anthony Brandt

Day Five of Ten

Six Things You Wish You'd Never Done.

1. Lied about it and then kept lying about it.

2. Taken those.

3. Kissed that boy.

4. Said that stupid thing.

5. Let my emotions run wild.

6. Fallen out of contact with you.

Monsters are real and ghosts are real, too. They live inside us and sometimes they win. - Stephen King

Day Five

Today's picture is a toughie. "A picture of your favorite memory". Do I have to have a favorite? I couldn't possibly choose. Days of giggles with my girlies, being proposed to in the absolute sweetest way man has ever seen, nights of comfort and love and connection and absolute truth, mischief you'll never know about, and endless miles of road travelled and endless laughter and friendship. Sappy, I know, but true. So, this is the best I can do for this picture.

All I can give you is some of the people I've made my favorite memories with.

Day Three of Ten

Eight ways to win your heart.

1. Touching. Easy, casual, absentminded, loving touches.

2. Make me laugh and laugh with me.

3. Ask my opinions, ask me about the things that I like. Take interest.

4. Notice when I'm unhappy. Know me well enough to notice. I hide it well, so pay attention.

5. Be a constant surprise. Be spontaneous and random. Sweep me off my feet.

6. Make sure I know you like/love me and being with me.

7. Love the things I love. Share interests and tastes.

8. Be Sean David Wilcox.

Day Two of Ten

Nine things about yourself.
Hopefully different from the ten I wrote yesterday.

1. I am a serious perfectionist and imperfection drives me up the wall.

2. My favorite movies are Fight Club, The Boondock Saints, Donnie Darko, Beauty and the Beast, and Pride and Prejudice (the one with Keira Knightly).

3. I want a dog more than just about anything else.

4. My right ankle is permanently messed up from multiple sprains from playing volleyball.

5. I hate bananas. Except when they're bananas foster.

6. Lucky Charms and cute shoes are like crack to me.

7. I super love TV. Who cares if it rots your brain?

8. I love the ocean and everything about it and everything in it.

9. I sell myself short most of the time. For instance, I think I'm a fuckup.

Where I'm From

I'm from action movies, from Lucky Charms and from Harry Potter.

I am from the welcoming, bright green house that I don't like the color of.

I am from the shamrocks, the tomato plants, the clams, and the weeds.

I am from Christmas Eve at Grandma and Papa's and worry, from Bill and Rosemary and Canonicas.

I am from the tendency to stick your nose where it doesn't belong and depression.

From "Marjie Cate!" and "You're my special girl".

I am from atheism and Catholicism, from a would-have-been priest, science, logic, and God.

I'm from the Emerald City and all over Europe, boiled shrimp and fresh-caught crab.

From the woman who would dig holes in chocolates with her thumb to see if she liked the filling before she would eat them, the imaginary friend I pushed into the sprinkler out of spite, and the grandfather who called all his granddaughters 'boys'.

I am from the childhood photos I stole from home, from Murano glass, from gross Christmas cookies, from family cookbooks, and so many blood relations I forget all their names. I am from things that make you ashamed and things that make you swell with pride. I am from balance and harmony and I am from chaos and disorder. I am from my parents, my grandparents, and everyone before. I am from the best of the best, the cream of the crop, and I am deeply loved and I love deeply.

Because I'm Not Doing Enough Already (Day One)

Another blog challenge, which will last the next ten days.
Day 01 - Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.
Day 02 - Nine things about yourself.
Day 03 - Eight ways to win your heart.
Day 04 - Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day 05 - Six things you wish you'd never done.
Day 06 - Five people who mean a lot to you.
Day 07 - Four songs that mean a lot to you.
Day 08 - Three things you want to do before you die.
Day 09 - Two of your most favorite memories.
Day 10 - One thing you want to be different in your life by next year.

DAY ONE
Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.

1. I have no words and too many, simultaneously. You astonish and astound me on the regular and love doesn't even begin to cover it. I could talk about my warm, fuzzy feelings for you forever and I do sometimes, so let's say something else right now. My heart breaks for you more than you know. It literally hurts when I think about what you went through and I would kill or die to go back in time to save you from it or just kiss everything better sooner. You will always have me and I swear I'll fill your head so full with happy memories that you forget the bad ones.

2. Fuck you, you total dick. This isn't your place and no one wants you here.

3. You need to stop trying to control everything. I know you do it out of love, but it doesn't help anything. It's just irritating.

4. I know I'm mean to you, but it's kinda my job. I'm trying to stop, though, because I love you with all my heart. Oh, tiny spoon, I'm sorry for everything I've ever done to you.

5. I heard something that makes me think you betrayed my confidence. You've never done that before, so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt until I hear it from you, but I swear to God if you did that to me, if you betrayed my trust like that in such an outlandish way, when I know you knew I would more than hate it, I will absolutely never trust you again. I hope it was worth it just so you could meddle like you always do. You are just like your mother.

6. Stop right where you are. Take a minute to breathe. Take a minute to deal with the pain. Take a minute to feel it. Things will be better for it, I promise. I love you and everything you do for me. I hope you know that. You take such good care of me.

7. Promise me you won't die. I want you to be there forever. I can't imagine life without you.

8. What the hell, dude? What the hell? What were you thinking? Why would you do that to me? Yes, I'm bitter, how could you tell? For such a good guy, you're a serious asshole sometimes.

9. Let's be friends, please.

10. I think you're really cool, for realzies. We should try to be friends because we like each other and have fun together instead of because we're always together. We need to bond hardcore.
